Pedro Pascal's Influence: Bella Ramsey Describes Her Crying Scene Process! Mon April 28th, 2025

The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey had their most difficult acting challenge to date during an action-packed and heartbreaking season. Ramsey had to film an emotional scene that took them outside of their comfort zone for Sunday's third episode of season two, and it wasn't the action scenes or stunts that were the most challenging.

The hardest part to shoot, according to Ramsey, was when Ellie sobs over Joel's (Pedro Pascal) jacket in a wardrobe. The 21-year-old Emmy candidate acknowledged, "Oh God, that scene in the closet was the hardest [scene]." Ramsey revealed that they hardly ever weep, even in private situations, and that it has always been difficult for them to cry when they should. It was nearly "virtually impossible" to perform such unfiltered passion in front of a whole set and a monitoring crew.

Ramsey used a different approach to get beyond the obstacle: rather than focusing on depressing personal memories, they highlighted their most joyful times spent with Pascal. “The thing that is always the saddest for me is remembering the happy things,” Ramsey said. They talked about their early days of working with Pascal, filming season one, and their shared laughing, fusing those happy recollections with Ellie's sorrow over Joel's passing.

Ramsey also discussed the conflicting feelings that surrounded their developing relationship with Pascal, describing how their closeness was strengthened by the realization that their time together was short. “We’ll be in each other’s lives forever, and we’ll be in each other’s hearts forever,” they told.

New duties also came with taking over as the show's only lead following Joel's passing. Ramsey accepted the post despite never seeing themselves as a natural leader, determined to create a welcoming and upbeat environment on set. “Everybody should know they’re valued as a crewmember, as a cast member, and that we’re all equals,” they highlighted.
