Dipika Chikhlia's Candid Take: Why Arun Govil as Dasharath is a 'Little Out of Context'! Mon July 07th, 2025
Dipika Chikhlia's Candid Take: Why Arun Govil as Dasharath is a 'Little Out of Context'!
The highly anticipated 'Ramayana' adaptation, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and starring Ranbir Kapoor, has sparked significant buzz, but it's also drawing reactions from the original cast of Ramanand Sagar's iconic 1987 TV series. Dipika Chikhlia, who immortalized the role of Sita for an entire generation, has voiced her surprise and reservations regarding her on-screen Ram, Arun Govil, being cast as Dasharath in the new cinematic venture.

Chikhlia, whose portrayal of Sita remains etched in the minds of millions, shared her candid thoughts in recent interviews. "I have seen him as Ram and I've seen myself as Sita," she stated, adding, "For me to see him as Dasharath is really a little out of context." She acknowledged that it's Govil's "personal choice" but emphasized the difficulty in breaking such a deeply ingrained image. "If you played Ram, then you are Ram," she remarked, echoing the sentiment of countless fans who associate Govil solely with the divine prince.

The Unbreakable Image: Ram and Sita of Yore

Ramanand Sagar's "Ramayan" was more than just a television show; it was a cultural phenomenon that deeply impacted Indian households. Arun Govil as Lord Ram and Dipika Chikhlia as Sita became household names, revered by many as the very embodiment of the deities. Their performances transcended mere acting, establishing an emotional and spiritual connection with the audience that endures to this day.

Chikhlia's comments highlight the unique challenge faced by actors who play such iconic mythological roles. The lines between the actor and the character often blur in the public consciousness, making it difficult for audiences to accept them in other roles, especially within the same epic.

Not Approached, Not Interested: Chikhlia's Stance on the New 'Ramayana'

Adding to her observations about Govil's casting, Dipika Chikhlia also expressed her disappointment at not being approached for any role in Nitesh Tiwari's "Ramayana." "I was never approached. I guess they've not even bothered to speak to me about it," she revealed.

However, Chikhlia firmly clarified that even if she had been offered a role, she would have declined any part other than Sita. "Once I played Sita, I don't think I can play any other character in Ramayan," she asserted. While she remains open to exploring roles in other mythological epics like "Mahabharat" or "Shiv Puran," her loyalty to her portrayal of Sita in "Ramayana" is unwavering.

The Debate Continues: Old vs. New Interpretations

The casting choices in Nitesh Tiwari's "Ramayana," including Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana, have already sparked considerable discussion among cinephiles and devout followers of the epic. Dipika Chikhlia's recent statements add another layer to this ongoing debate, emphasizing the nostalgic attachment to the original series and the unique challenges of reinterpreting a beloved saga.

As the new "Ramayana" inches closer to its release, the anticipation is palpable, but so is the lingering sentiment for the cherished memories forged by Ramanand Sagar's timeless creation and its unforgettable cast.
