In Hulu's latest political thriller, Paradise, Sterling K. Brown returns to the screen alongside Dan Fogelman, the writer of This Is Us.

Brown plays Xavier Collins, a secret service agent and single father who finds himself entangled in a startling murder investigation in the show's inaugural episode, which aired on Sunday, January 26. Even after working with Fogelman for a long period, Brown was surprised by the pilot episode's turn.

The main suspect in the murder of President Cal Bradford (played by James Marsden) in Paradise is Brown's character, Xavier Collins. The first episode follows Xavier when he finds the president dead and starts looking into the murder on his own.

But when Xavier finds out that he and the others are imprisoned in a strictly regulated underground bunker, the scheme becomes more complicated. Who assassinated the president and why they are in the bunker are two fresh questions that the twist raises.

Even though Brown had previously collaborated with Fogelman, the turn in Paradise nevertheless caught him off guard. "I said, 'You son of a gun,'" Brown reflected in a daily report about his response. You did it once more.

He claimed to have anticipated a simple political thriller but was instead thrust into a whole new situation. "I thought I was just looking at a political thriller and I'm trying to figure out who killed the president. And that was enough. I was totally satisfied."

The twist left him stunned, telling, "I find out that this whole thing is taking place in this bunker that sunshine is not sunshine, that ducks aren't mother-effing ducks."
