In a rare and candid interview with director Paul Thomas Anderson for Esquire, the Oscar-winning actor shared his thoughts on aging, life, and how his perspective has shifted.

"Emotionally 35" and the Peter Pan Syndrome

When asked about turning 50, DiCaprio, known for his perennial youthful image and a famous dating pattern, offered a witty, self-aware response. He first quipped that he felt like he had "turned emotionally 35." This remark, which has since gone viral, has been interpreted by many as a nod to his reputation as the "Peter Pan of Hollywood." While his physical age is 50, his emotional and mental state, he suggests, aligns more with a man in his mid-30s.

In a follow-up, Anderson asked him to state his age without thinking about it, to which DiCaprio immediately responded, "Thirty-two." This seemingly spontaneous answer has further fueled online discussions and jokes about his well-documented preference for dating women under the age of 25.

The Honest Side of Turning 50

Beyond the humorous remarks, DiCaprio offered a more profound insight into how his outlook has changed. He explained that reaching this age has instilled in him a powerful desire to be more honest and not waste time. "It creates a feeling like you have a desire to just be more honest and not waste your time," he said.

He drew inspiration from his own mother, Irmelin, who he said "just says exactly what she thinks and wastes no time. She spends no time trying to fake it."

DiCaprio emphasized that this new mindset extends to all aspects of his life—personal and professional. "Being more upfront and risking having things fall apart or risk the disagreements...it's that you just don't want to waste your time anymore," he added. "You have to just be much more upfront. It's almost a responsibility because much more of your life is behind you than it is ahead of you."

A Career of Reflection

The interview also touched upon his illustrious career, and DiCaprio confessed to one of his biggest regrets: turning down the lead role in Paul Thomas Anderson's 1997 masterpiece, Boogie Nights. He admitted that the timing conflicted with his commitments to Titanic, but he considers Boogie Nights a "profound movie of my generation."
