Mumbai, India: Bollywood mourns the loss of veteran filmmaker Partho Ghosh, director of acclaimed films like 100 Days and Agni Sakshi, who passed away on Monday, June 9, 2025, at the age of 75. He reportedly succumbed to a heart attack at his residence in Madh Island, Mumbai.
 
Ghosh's demise was confirmed by actress Rituparna Sengupta, who shared a heartfelt tribute, expressing her profound sorrow. "Heartbroken beyond words. We have lost an exceptional talent, a visionary director, and a kind soul. Partho da, you will always be remembered for the magic you created on screen. Rest in peace,” she wrote.
 
Born on June 8, 1949, Partho Ghosh was a prominent figure in Indian cinema, particularly in the 1990s. He carved a niche for himself by skillfully blending commercial appeal with compelling narratives, often exploring themes of suspense, drama, and social relevance.

Partho Ghosh began his cinematic journey as an assistant director in 1985 before making his significant directorial debut. His breakthrough came with the 1991 psychological thriller 100 Days, starring Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff. A remake of the Tamil film Nooravathu Naal, the film's gripping plot, featuring a woman with extrasensory perception, captivated audiences and remains a cult classic.

  • Dalaal (1993): Starring Mithun Chakraborty and Ayesha Jhulka, this film was a commercial hit and further established Ghosh as a director capable of delivering engaging mainstream cinema.
  • Teesra Kaun? (1994): A murder mystery that garnered attention for its unique treatment and engaging storyline.
  • Agni Sakshi (1996): This powerful thriller-drama, starring Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, and Manisha Koirala, became a milestone film. It was widely appreciated for its intense performances and its sensitive portrayal of domestic violence, a subject rarely explored in mainstream cinema at the time. The film earned him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Director.
  • Ghulam-E-Musthafa (1997): A crime drama featuring Nana Patekar and Raveena Tandon, which also achieved significant success.
 
Throughout his career, Partho Ghosh directed over 15 films across various genres in both Hindi and Bengali cinema.
