With Tiger around, filmmakers usually do not bother finding a script. Instead they just coast along joining the dots of a routine story with neatly-choreographed songs and fights at regular intervals. Tiger has in the past made movies like Heropanti, Baaghi work at the box-office with just his agility and sincerity. So director Sabbir Khan, whose third outing this is with Tiger, continues providing formula for the intellectually challenged. But Tiger admirers will have a field day with his breakdancing. Tiger dances like a dream and breaks bones with the grace of a ballerina. You can only tell that this is a different movie only because he mouths a different dialogue here. He constantly pulls out weapons from his arsenal as back-flip, midair Van Damme-split and kick, glide, moonwalk or a just bare-body shot etc.
Film Munna Michael is about Munna (Tiger Shroff), an orphan raised by a former background dancer Michael (Ronit Roy), who wants Munna to get a corporate job and not make a living from his dance skills because of his own bitter experiences. But Munna has been a Michael Jackson fan since day one and nothing can stop him from showing off his moves.
When Munna runs into Mahendra Fauji (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a rustic businessman-gangster from Delhi, the latter offers to pay the former a substantial amount if Munna teaches him how to dance. As Munna needs the money for his father’s surgery, he agrees to be Mahendra’s dance teacher so that the businessman can impress Dolly, the woman he likes (Niddhi Agerwal), a dancer herself. But, things get complicated when Munna too falls for Dolly. Who will get the girl? The smooth Munna or the rustic Mahendra?
Tiger plays a slum kid in this film, but he truly lacks the ‘tough guy’ charm of his father Jackie Shroff. Tiger can move on the dance floor and perform roundhouse kicks with ease, but he fails to be ‘Munna’, a tapori kid from Teen Batti. Niddhi is fairly beautiful, but overconfident Niddhi’s act is normal. Nawazuddin tries his best to save the movie and manages to evoke a few giggles and bring a lump to your throat in a few scenes with his ‘vulnerable villain’ performance.
Director Sabbir Khan, who had teamed up with Tiger for Heropanti and Baaghi, infuses this movie with loads of 80s style movie ingredients. The orphan found in a garbage dump, money needed for father’s surgery, two friends turning enemies because they love the same woman et al and the movie has a very outmoded feel because of it.
The plot certainly had promise and there was so much that could be done with it, but the weak execution, the feeble screenplay, the average performances and the heavy dose of masala contribute to make the movie an ineffective. In spite of this, the first half of the movie was a little entertaining, particularly the sequences between Tiger and Nawazuddin. But post-interval, the movie stretches needlessly. Munna Michael’ proves to be a normal affair for fans of dance films.
Film Munna Michael is an average film with a few good dance moves and Nawazuddin’s entertaining act.
