Vidya Balan opens up on playing the role of Silk Smitha in The Dirty Picture!
Renowned for her powerful performances, Vidya Balan revealed that she encountered resistance from individuals over her choice to work on The Dirty Picture, where she played Silk Smitha and received a National Film Award. Vidya Balan also remembered her reaction when she was informed that the film might harm her career.

Vidya Balan recalled how people had told her not to be in the movie, saying it would damage her career, during a session at the 54th International Film Festival of India in Goa. She told, “There were some people who told me, 'Are you sure? It's going to ruin your career. It may actually spell the end of your career because you know you have been Miss Goody two shoes.”

In light of this, Vidya claimed that after decades in the business, it is meaningless to call her "Miss Goody Two Shoes" because she has only acted in a small number of movies and isn't doing anything new. She underlined that this is the reason she acts.

She remembered how excited she had been to play Silk. But when Milan Luthria initially came up to her, she didn't think someone would genuinely offer her the part. She revealed, “The first time Milan Luthria came to me, mujhe laga ki, ‘Aap ghalat darwaaze pe toh nahi aagaye (Are you sure about it)?’ Because I wouldn’t believe that someone would actually offer me this role.”

She added that there was a tremendous desire to take on challenges and achieve things that people couldn't envision her doing. She further revealed, “There was this burning desire to do things that people couldn’t imagine I could do but I knew I could do. I was thrilled to bits when the film came to me. I said yes instinctively.”

The Dirty Picture is a biographical musical drama based on the life of Silk Smitha.
