ABOUT TUMHARI SULU
Vivacious Vidya Balan is one of the best actors we have in Bollywood, who has showed her mettle with movies such as Kahaani and Begum Jaan. But now, Vidya's Sulochana a.k.a Sulu is most loveable character till date.
As per story, Sulochana (Vidya Balan) is a middle-class homemaker from Virar, who is good at everything she tries her hand at and is rather keen to be gainfully employed. When she gets a chance to be a radio jockey at her favourite radio station, she immediately takes it up, despite the reservations of her husband Ashok (Manav Kaul).
Sulu boasts of achievements of being the runner-up in the lemon-spoon race, winner of the residential society’s Best Mom contest, winning pressure cookers and utensils in random lucky draws and the likes. But, her life turns into a roller-coaster ride when she arrives at a radio station to collect a prize – another pressure cooker.
Despite her lack of experience, Sulu proves to be good at her job and when her show becomes popular, it starts driving a wedge between her and Ashok, whose career seems to be in jeopardy after the arrival of a new boss. How Sulu manages to deal with her work and her personal life, forms the rest of the plot.
Actress Vidya Balan has essayed her most adorable character ever and it is pure fun to see her guffaw and chuckle as Sulu on the screen. As Sulu, Balan makes you laugh and brings a lump to your throat with equal and natural ease. Manav Kaul, who essays her husband Ashok, too has done a good job and has provided rock-solid support to Balan. Balan and Kaul look good together and their chemistry is quite honest. The movie also stars Neha Dhupia and Vijay Maurya, who have acted excellently while RJ Malishka pleasurably surprises us with her ease on the screen.
The cinematography of the movie deserves admiration for their work for helping create a visually appealing and believable movie. Every petite detail has been taken into consideration while shooting this movie and this simply makes the movie more relevant.
As for the movie itself, Tumhari Sulu’ is an enjoyable, slice-of-life movie, which also talks about woman empowerment and the problems faced by housewives, without getting too preachy about it. The portrayal of a middle-class family from Virar, the issues faced by a family where both the partners are working and the way frustration at work can affect personal lives-all these elements have been flawlessly woven together to bring a relevant and heart-warming story, which is worth the ticket price.
The song Hawa Hawaai is an energetic and tuneful number. The movie feels repetitive and stretched, making you exasperated. It is a light-hearted comedy about a woman finding a voice, and a heavy family drama.
Overall, it is a praiseworthy film for a light-hearted family entertainer lovers and Vidya Balan’s fans.
