Sui Dhaaga: Made In India

ABOUT SUI DHAAGA: MADE IN INDIA

MOVIE RATING
After Dum Laga Ke Haisha’s success, Sharat Katariya comes with something new as entrepreneurship in the central theme. Sui Dhaaga is full of simple daily conflicts and solutions that are effortlessly woven into the storyline. Writer-director Sharat Katariya’s film is quite simply the story of a young couple that find the impetus and self-motivation to break out and take risks.

About story as encouraged by his wife Mamta (Anushka Sharma), Mauji (Varun Dhawan) decides to ditch his demanding bosses for his own tailoring business. But amidst naysayers, unscrupulous relatives and lack of support, will his dream of turning into an entrepreneur become a reality?

Varun Dhawan delivers an honest performance. He brings a similar naiveté to Mauji, albeit endearingly. Anushka Sharma lives the character, clad in a simple sari, sporting sindoor and minimal make up. Anushka lifts the film with her strong performance.
Among the other cast, Raghubir Yadav is spot on as a cynical father, taunting his son with sarcastic one-liners that will often make you chuckle. Another actress Yamini Dass, who plays Mauji’s mother. She justifies every moment of her screen-time.

Director Sharat Katariya does take a few cinematic liberties, but there are sufficient real moments to move you. In the first half, he effectively establishes his main characters and their problems. Movie’s songs and background score lend gravitas to the story. While the narrative doesn’t get too preachy or foreseeable, the second half is really good.

Anil Mehta’s cinematography, costumes by Darshan Jalan and Neelanchal Kumar Ghosh and Meenal Agarwal’s production design bring alive Mamta and Mauji’s intimate little world. Notice Dinesh Master’s subtle choreography too.

Film Sui Dhaaga is a well-intentioned, simply woven, feel-good entertainer that delivers as much as it promises.

Overall, film Sui Dhaaga is worthy to watch once for strong performances and strong sociopolitical message of entrepreneurship.
