ABOUT SIMRAN

MOVIE RATING
In Simran, Kangana Ranaut drives from the front seat, keeping her feet confidently on the accelerator, and everybody else in the cast follows. While that is a completely wonderful thing because Ranaut is in top form, it also becomes a failing, and ultimately prevents the movie from becoming a stand-out. And that’s because there’s altogether too much of Ranaut without adequate support from the plot, which runs off in all directions in order to keep her in every frame, and it all becomes too much of a good thing.

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, who has been astonishing us with her utter talent since her Queen days, teams up with much-admired filmmaker Hansal Mehta for the first time for Simran, a tragicomedy based on true events.

Film ‘Simran’ revolves around Praful Patel, a Gujarati divorcee working in the housekeeping department of a reputed hotel, who is working her butt off to save enough money to buy an apartment of her own, despite the skepticism of her conservative parents. While on a trip to Las Vegas with her cousin for her bachelorette, Praful gets hooked to gambling and soon, her addiction leads to her life turning upside down as she uses her saved up money to recover the amount she loses at the casino. When she borrows money (around 50 thousand dollars) from a local loan shark, she is left with no other alternative than to rob banks to raise enough money to keep the loan shark’s goon off her back. What happens as her fear pushes her to be a criminal, forms the rest of the plot.

Kangana has essayed a Gujarati character for the first time in her career and she enacts role of Praful Patel, who comes from a middle-class family and is frustrated by her conservative family background. The act of the lead actor in Simran is top notch. The film rests on Kangana's shoulders and she doesn't disappoint. Kangana is effortless in her act character. Sohum Shah, who essays her suitor, is very good and the rest of the cast is quite inspiring.

The narrative of Simran is in place early on in the. Simran touches upon the issue of racism in the US but never quite delves deep into it. The tale is dealt with sufficient humour. But it soon deviates towards darker territories. It was hyped as a thriller.

The music in Simran is used generally to steer the story forward.

Film Simran does have its faults like the fact that Praful seems to get away with robbing banks with silly ease. But, if you overlook the errors, Simran is a genuinely emotive movie. Praful’s troublesome relationship with her parents is quite real and relevant.

Overall, it is worthy to watch once for Kangana’s admirable act.
