Well-known filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is mainly famous for his dark and edgy crime movies. Now, he tackles a love story ages after Dev D with Manmarziyaan starring Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal. The maturity with which Anurag Kashyap’s Manmarziyaan talks about love and relationships is inspirational.
As story set in Amritsar, Punjab, it revolves around three main characters as Rumi, Vicky and Robbie. Rumi (Taapsee Pannu) and Vicky (Vicky Kaushal) are in love and they can’t stay out of the bedroom. When they’re caught red handed by Rumi’s family, pressure builds up to get married. But Vicky has cold feet and keeps avoiding Rumi's request to bring his parents over and ask her hand in marriage. Eventually, she gives up on him and agrees to an arranged marriage. That's when Robbie (Abhishek Bachchan) enters the proverbial love triangle. Nevertheless, the story doesn’t end there because Rumi and Vicky are still obsessed with each other while Robbie has fallen heels over head in love with Rumi. Who finally ends up with Rumi? The rebel Vicky or the stable Robbie?
After Masaan, Vicky Kaushal is remarkable as Vicky and proves again his versatility. After Pink, Taapsee too shows her versatility as Rumi, who can’t seem to make up her mind between the two men in her lives. After 2 years break, Abhishek Bachchan makes an impressive comeback to Bollywood. He has essayed Robbie with striking poise and maturity.
About the story, Manmarziyaan is a film which is sensitive and engaging. The film will make you smile, it will make you wince and it will bring a lump to your throat because while you will empathize with the characters, you will also feel like shaking them by their shoulders and drumming some sense into their heads. Kanika Dhillon’s writing on Manmarziyaan is top-notch.
Anurag Kashyap has adopted a restrained storytelling style where dialogue and emotions take centre stage. The dialogues and settings are relevant and the characters have been written with much thought. Melodious music is definitely one of the highlights of the movie. Amit Trivedi’s music elevates the emotions in the movie to a large degree. Sylvester Fonseca’s cinematography is remarkable. Manmarziyaan is one of the best romantic movies to come out of Bollywood in a long time.
Overall, Manmarziyaan is worthy to watch once for good performances and refreshing modern love story.
